A solid drill enables the drilling of holes with a diameter of 12 to 65 mm and a drilling depth of five times the diameter. For this purpose, the drill is equipped with an outer and inner cutting edge. It is often used for pre-drilling in solid material.

The accuracy of the hole is +-0.1 to +-0.2 mm in diameter, depending on the cutting inserts and material. The solid drill can machine various materials such as grey cast iron, nodular cast iron, steel and non-ferrous metals. The machines are mainly used in the field of machine and vehicle construction.

Drilling with inserts from Lothmann

The company Lothmann Werkzeugtechnik GmbH & Co. KG manufactures solid drills that are equipped with indexable inserts. A major advantage is the individual addition of further cutting inserts, which, in addition to solid drilling, also enable additional countersinking, chamfering and reboring. The special chip geometries of the inserts also make it possible to achieve the shortest possible chips.

The inserts can be purchased from various suppliers such as Sandvik, Seco, Walter or Komet. Since these are ISO inserts, they can be replaced worldwide and, above all, at low cost after wear. At Lothmann, the shank can also be customised, e.g. a solid drill with Sandvik inserts and Komet ABS-compatible shank.
